The best apps for marathon training plans

Whether you’re an experienced runner or are completely fresh to the track, training for a marathon is no easy feat. It demands dedication, meal plans and a specific training plan to ensure you’re truly prepared for those 26 miles. Safe to say that you could do with all the helping hands you can get.

Today, with technology becoming increasingly advanced, smartphone apps can really help you stay on track – with an ever growing number that are helping marathoners in tuning their training plans and ensuring they stick to them for optimal results. Here are five of the very best.

 1. Run Half Marathon

This app is built for those who are building up to a half marathon (and it sets out a plan to help you achieve this in just 13 weeks).

There’s a calendar that marks your successful training sessions, with all of your stats saved in each date (such as distance, pace, elevation and calories burned). There are also training plans for 5K and 10K runs if you’re feeling as 13 miles in 13 weeks is too tough an ask.

Cost: $4.99

Smartphone Platform: iOS only

2. Runkeeper

Runkeeper is great for marathon training, however it also goes beyond this to provide complete flexibility for other races and distances. It features built in GPS, music controls and even audio coaching!

If that weren’t enough, this app also works alongside a number of heart rate sensors and activity trackers (including Fitbit, Zoo, Garmin, and Wii things).

Cost: Free

Smartphone Platform: iOS / Android

3. C25K 5K Trainer

If you’re working to a short timescale for your marathon training and you’re starting from the position of being an out and out novice, then you’re going to need to get to a great 5K time in as short a timescale as possible. C25K (Couch to 5k) can get you there in just 8 weeks – and once you do reach this stage you can then download the half-marathon trainer or marathon trainer – both of which are from the same developers (although they are premium apps, priced at £7.99 each).

Cost: Free

Smartphone Platform: IOS and Android

 4. MilePost

MilePost is an essential tool for those who need a little support and motivation. Whilst it really packs in all that you need for the physical side of marathon running, it also features running quotes that can help inspire you to keep you pounding the pavements.

Cost: Free

Smartphone Platform: Android / IOS

 5. McRun

McRun is a sophisticated offering that is aimed at the more experienced runner. It’s mostly focused on helping you in improving your running times – and it can help you in training for ultramarathon races.
